Summer College Credit Program

The Summer College Credit Program is a great way to explore careers, earn college credit and high school credit, and save money.

The FREE Summer College Credit Program courses are open to students who will be in grades 9–12 during the 2023–2024 academic year at a high school in Hawkeye’s service area.

An Iowa Department of Education grant will pay the entire cost of the course, including tuition, fees, textbooks, and supplies. There is no cost to either students or school districts!

Receive College Credit and High School Credit

These are real college courses and the grade you earn will be on your official Hawkeye Community College transcript. The college credit you earn may satisfy program requirements at Hawkeye. To learn more, contact the High School Partnerships office. We’ll be glad to help you explore your opportunities!

If your high school participates in the Summer College Credit Program, your courses will be on your official high school transcript, and your grades will be included in your high school GPA.

Health Sciences

BIO-151 Nutrition

3 credits — Principles of Nutrition will introduce students to the science of nutrition. The course will examine individual nutrients; their structure and function in the human body; nutrient composition of food; and selection of food to meet nutrient needs, maintain health and satisfaction. Students will understand and apply present day knowledge of nutrition to dietary patterns and needs of selected individuals and groups. The course is an advanced beginning course in human nutrition designed for students with a science background.

EMS-114 Emergency Medical Responder

2 credits — This course provides the student with the necessary skills and knowledge to identify and treat life-threatening emergencies, wounds and fractures, medical and environmental emergencies and patient access and handling. This course utilizes a combination of classroom lecture and skills practice.

Students must be 17 to qualify for the certification exam at the end of this course.

HSC-168 Nurse Aide

3.5 credits — Required to meet the training requirements for nurse aides in long-term care facilities. Emphasizes achievement of a basic level of knowledge and demonstration of skills to provide safe and effective resident care. Integrates 30 hours of clinical, outside of normal class times, at a long-term care facility under the supervision of an RN. Requires your own transportation.

CRJ-100 Introduction to Criminal Justice

3 credits — This course examines the day-to-day operation of criminal justice in our society. Emphasis is on the inter-relationships of the components of law enforcement, the courts, corrections, and the juvenile justice system.

Sustainable Construction

CON-102 Introduction to Residential Construction

2 credits — Students will be introduced to basic residential construction safety, history, terminology, materials, and basic construction techniques. This course will cover basic information and develop manual skills needed to begin construction of a new home.

CON-108 Construction Safety

1 credit — The Construction Safety course will provide students with the requirements and expectations required to work safely in the numerous occupations of the construction industry. The course will introduce students to the national OSHA safety standards for General Construction and upon their completion of this course will receive the OSHA 10 hour General Construction certification.

Power Technology

AUT-106 Introduction to Automotive Technology

2 credits—This introductory course provides an introduction to the many facets of the automotive industry to include: careers in the automotive industry, environmental concerns affecting the automotive industry, basic automotive hand tools, specialty tools, precision measuring tools, power tools and shop equipment, using service and shop manuals, and shop safety.

2 credits — This course applies the principles of menu planning and layout to the development of menus for a variety of types of facilities and service. The course will also examine the kitchen design, and facility layout.

SOC-110 Introduction to Sociology

3 credits — This course surveys the basic principles, concepts, and research findings of social life from small groups to societies. Registration opens: Tuesday, April 4, 2023 at 9:00am
Registration deadline: Monday, May 15, 2023 at 4:00pm

Step 1: Register Online

  1. Log in to the Concurrent Registration System

  2. Select Location: Summer College Credit Program

  3. Select the course(s) you plan to take.

  4. Click the Submit Intent to Register button.

Step 2: Apply for admission to the Liberal Arts-High School Student academic program

This step only needs to be completed if this is your first time registering for a Concurrent Enrollment course at Hawkeye Community College. Even if you have applied to attend Hawkeye full-time after high school, all students new to concurrent enrollment must submit an admissions application to apply to the Liberal Arts-High School Student academic program to take courses as a high school student.

Your course registration(s) will not be processed without a Liberal Arts-High School Student admission application.

You will need your social security number to complete the application. If you do not have one, follow the instructions in the application.

To apply for admission to the Liberal Arts-High School Student academic program:

  1. Sign In to your Admissions Account or Create your Admissions Account if you have not done so already.
  2. Click the "Create a New Application" link.
  3. Click the orange "College Credit in High School Application" button.
